[Forum]UseBB 1.0.9 released

After eight months without a new release, here is UseBB “still alive” 1.0.9. UseBB is a light and Open Source PHP/MySQL bulletin board package.

Version 1.0.9 fixes the bugs discovered since the release of 1.0.8 in September 2007, including:
- BBCode in links breaks XML well-formedness;
- RSS feed fails to validate;
- redirect URLs containing backslashes on some platforms (Windows);
- Jabber link on profile needs “xmpp” as protocol, not “jabber”;
- made smiley image tags refer to the path using ROOT_PATH.

As always, upgrading is recommended. (All < 1.0.9 versions are officially unsupported as of today.) Visit http://www.usebb.net/downloads/ for downloads. Information about upgrading is available in the docs/index.html document.

The story of boastMachine
OK people, lets here a story. The story of boastMachine. It goes like this. Long long ago (Dec ‘03), in a galaxy (Milky way), a teeny kid (16) was sitting front of his computer, staring at the screen blankly. Yup, that was me ! That was the time when I had just learned PHP. Learning PHP, however, caused me to dump my old favorite, Perl. So basically, I was sitting there with nothing to do. Bling! I had an idea! I quickly opened my text editor, CuteHTML (my all time favorite), ran the Sambar webserver and started scribbling down php code. Not to forget, I was on the Windows 98 platform then After long three hours, I finally came up with something ‘EZ-articles’!

What? EZ-Articles?? It was a teeny-tiny, crappy-buggy, article publishing system. Size wise, it was the smallest of all CMS systems and functionality wise, the poorest. Being satisfied with what I had done. Day-Night, Day-Night, Day-Night.. One full week went by like a breeze. The ‘EZ-Articles’ was sitting idle in D:\Sambar\docs . What to do now? Didn’t feel like killing it for ever, so I again struggled with the code, this time, for six hours. I had done a great thing, I was the sole person who watched EZ-Articles gros from 0 to v1.0 Newly added features, as far i remember, where smilies, post search, backup/restore . Quickly I whipped up a readme, tightly packed everything into a zip and posted on hotscripts.com without any hesitation. Again day-night, day-night.. one week passed. http://localhost/ez-article , Yuck! What in the world is that! I couldn’t believe that I was the one who did that mess out there! Temptation/Greed for more easily overcame my anger and I quickly started working on the scripts again. What I came up with was ‘bMachine v1.0′, yes, the first ever boastMachine. But I hadn’t named it then. I had no idea what to call my cutie. That was the time when I was experimenting with all sorts of stupid stuff and I had the domain name boastology.com in hand, but no ideas to put to work on it. So I thought why don’t I somehow connect my ‘EZ-Articles’ with boastology.com ? It didn’t take me much time to come up with ‘boastMachine’. Publishing and blogging is a kind of boasting, so without any hesitation, I named my cute little software ‘bMachine’.

It didn’t take much time, that emails and bug reports :S started pouring in. And that day, I decided to take bMachine to the next level! Working and working and working and working.. I released almost ten consecutive versions of bMachine in one single month. The release of bMachine 2.9 was the turning point in the history boastMachine. Lots and lots of people started using it for it had the ability to run with or without a mysql database. But that was the time when the author of pMachine (pmachine.com) contacted me asking to withdraw the name ‘bMachine’. I had no choice but to ditch ‘bMachine’ and go for the full form instead, i.e, ‘boastMachine’ ! With version 3.0, boastMachine became the official ‘boastMachine’.
